Integrating Sustainability into
Business Decisions and Processes
For Alcan, the challenge of
integrating sustainability into core business processes
occurs at two levels. The corporate level is where overall
policies and strategic direction are set and capital
is allocated. The business groups generate revenue and
are also where impacts on communities and the environment
are most immediate, reflecting the diverse activities,
challenges and opportunities of the different businesses.
During 2003 and early 2004, we took several steps towards
integrating sustainability at both levels. At the end
of 2003, we formed a Sustainability
Steering Team reporting to the Alcan Executive Committee.
Steering Team membership includes senior representatives
of both key corporate functions and business group management.
One priority of the Steering Team is to explore opportunities
for integrating sustainability considerations into our
business systems and activities.
Three business groups have already designated sustainability
leaders to champion the development of sustainability
efforts in their operations. This approach helps to
develop initiatives that are appropriate to each business
group's unique challenges and opportunities. Others
have been asked to designate resources to work with
the SST to further integrate sustainability concepts.
Working with one business group, we are exploring how
sustainability can be incorporated into the key business
process of Continuous Improvement. We have also begun
developing the training that supports sustainability
awareness and capacity within key business functions
and our business groups. Starting in 2003, we set the
wheels in motion to integrate sustainability into our
business processes. Actions included the developing
an Alcan statement of value and exploration by the business
groups of their key sustainability issues and goals
related to those issues.
Business groups are developing goals and strategies
that address their key sustainability issues, and are
working to include sustainability considerations in
their 2005 business planning process.
