Collaboration
on Community Training at Sebree

Issues: Community Development, Industry Shifts
Stakeholders: Employees, Government, Communities
Region: North America

In the US, at Primary Metal's Sebree facility, Alcan became fully involved in the development of a community business and industry training program that was funded with a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Known as the Tri-County Business and Industry Training Consortium, the funds received were dedicated to providing training opportunities for the workforce of member-companies from Henderson, Union and Webster counties. Unemployed persons of the area also participated.

Alcan is one of the founding members and Sebree's plant manager was appointed to the consortium's board to help oversee program implementation. Several plant employees serve on advisory and sub-committees and dozens of employees have assisted in the training sessions. The consortium's goal is to aid in new job creation in the region and close the skills gap that exists in segments of the local workforce by offering training opportunities in pre-employment skills, high tech and soft skill areas and strengthening the skill levels of those workers.
