Business Group Profile
"For Rolled Products Europe, our
commitment to sustainability means creating value by
providing our customers with innovative solutions that
enable them, in turn, to improve the sustainability
of their own products.
"We are keen to work with customers
to help them maximize the total life cycle benefits
of aluminum. Stewardship of the health, safety and welfare
of our colleagues underpins our every activity and through
practical steps we actively strive to reduce our impact
on the environment and use of resources."
Chris Bark-Jones, President and Chief Executive
Officer, Alcan Rolled Products Europe
As Europe's largest producer of value-added aluminum
sheet and plate, the Rolled Products Europe group supplies
more than one million tonnes per year of rolled products
for a variety of uses, including beverage can production,
lithographic plate for the printing industry, foil,
tooling plate as well as automotive and building applications.
Sustained efforts to achieve a higher value portfolio
mix while reducing costs were reflected in Rolled Products
Europe's improved profitability and enhanced overall
performance for 2003. Increased levels of system utilization,
significant savings in the procurement and supply-chain
area and optimization initiatives at the local plant
level all contributed to the improved results.
Building on the introduction of VAMS (Value-Added Manufacturing
System) the previous year, in 2003 the group continued
efforts towards new developments in rolled aluminum,
be it process improvements or innovative new aluminum
solutions for existing and future customers. Furthermore,
other key objectives for the group included a continued
emphasis on EHS best practices, an increased emphasis
on recycling and focused efforts on reducing our environmental
footprint by monitoring and reducing emissions (air,
water, land).
Following Alcan's acquisition of Pechiney in late 2003,
the Rolled Products Europe group gained additional rolling
assets including sheet, foil and recycling operations,
a casting technology business and casting-alloy recycling
business. Rolled Products Europe has 6,700 employees
in its facilities in seven countries.
The proposed 2004 spin-off to create an independent
world-class rolled products company includes 18 major
European production facilities. These include foil,
sheet, light gauge and recycling operations that would
become part of the new company.
