HALE Project: Reducing energy consumption in electrolysis
Aluminum is produced through an electrolytic process where an increase in electrical current can increase metal production. In recent years, Alcan's Lynemouth U.K. Smelter has introduced the High Amperage Low Energy (HALE) project to capitalize on this potential.

Energy efficiency at Quebec alumina plant
At the Vaudreuil alumina complex in Quebec, Canada, an internal Continuous Improvement project set out to minimize steam consumption within the process as well as in the utilities.

Reduction of GHG emissions through biomass
Alcan's Lynemouth Power Station is the most efficient coal-fired power station of its kind in the U.K. Following permission from the U.K. Environment Agency in December 2003 for industry to burn biomass as a commercial fuel, Lynemouth began investigating the viability of this alternative.

Reduction of fossil fuel use in Iceland
In early 2004, the management team at Alcan's ISAL smelter in Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, focused on further reducing energy consumption related to the heating of casting centre furnaces.

Conversion to natural gas – Alcan Gove Australia
Delivery of natural gas to Gove will ensure a secure, economical and long-term energy source for the refinery, have a positive environmental impact, as well as provide opportunities for new and existing businesses in the Northern Territory and Queensland states.

"Save Watts" program at Ronchin (ECL) in France
The Ronchin facility (technology and equipment sales) in France launched a program in February 2004 to reduce electricity consumption through the participation of all employees.
