MINIMIZING SHUTDOWN IMPACTS AT ARVIDA
Business Group: Primary Metal
Region: North America

In January 2004, Alcan announced the permanent shutdown of the Söderberg potlines at Arvida Works in Quebec – a move that will improve the air quality in the region. Söderberg is an older technology that is gradually being phased out throughout the industry.

In the Söderberg process, potlines have greater PAH emissions compared to potlines using prebaked anodes such as those remaining in operation at Arvida Works and all the other smelters in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean area. The newer technology is also more efficient, therefore further contributing to the reduction of GHG emissions per tonne of aluminum produced. The shutdown was gradually implemented between February and April 2004, with an immediate concern to minimize the impacts on the 550 persons affected by the closing of the potlines. Alcan committed to zero layoffs related to the closure, to take care of employees and to work hard with stakeholders to find sustainable economic development solutions for the future of the Jonquière Industrial Complex.

The necessary resources were put in place to coordinate personnel relocation within Arvida Works (prebake potlines remain in operation) and in other Alcan facilities in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region with the cooperation of all concerned parties (including unions). At the beginning of 2005, 300 senior employees chose the retirement option, which facilitated relocation of other personnel, either on a permanent or temporary basis. Alcan monitored the situation closely, with the collaboration of the unions, in order to avoid layoffs.

In fall 2004, Alcan also started discussions with employee representatives as to how to extend the "viability'' of the Jonquière Complex. This is part of a larger Alcan strategy to support the economic and industrial development of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

By avoiding layoffs caused by the shutdown of the Söderberg potlines while cooperating with stakeholders to find new uses for the old Jonquière industrial complex, Alcan is helping to plan a sustainable future for the region.
