THE ROAD TO BIODIVERSITY
Business Group: Primary Metal
Region: North America

As a major economic partner in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, Alcan takes an active role in helping the region to grow in areas not related to the aluminum business. As an example, in December 2004, Alcan and the Fondation de la faune du Québec, a wildlife organization, jointly launched a new sustainable initiative called The Road to Biodiversity.

This project aims to preserve and enhance biodiversity in the northern section of the Saguenay region between the municipalities of Saint-Fulgence and Tadoussac. Its development, which would also stimulate the tourism development of the sector, will be integrated with other economic, environmental and tourism initiatives in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The project will combine efforts by various partners from the scientific research field, public authorities, community groups and business to protect and promote the unique diversity of fauna and flora in the region (through existing or new interpretation centres, access to special sites, etc.). Alcan will invest CAN$200,000 to implement this initiative and an additional $1.2 million is pledged to support related projects and organizations linked to biodiversity along the route.
