ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION IN SAGUENAY–
LAC-SAINT-JEAN

Business Group: Primary Metal
Region: North America

The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada was chosen in April 2004 as the site for an office dedicated to industrial development in all regions where the Company operates in Canada.

A team composed of a dozen experts works with regional partners (entrepreneurs, regional business organizations, etc.) in order to support concrete efforts leading to industrial development and the creation of jobs. Efforts are oriented toward three objectives:
•   The growth of value-added fabrication activities and aluminum-based products through technology transfer inside Alcan;
•   The continued development of regional capacities in research, technology and engineering;
•   The growth of local enterprises and suppliers directly or indirectly associated with primary aluminum production.

As a further illustration, the Primary Metal group has re-positioned its Dubuc plant in the Saguenay region as a world leader for the production of bussbars for smelters as well as in specialized products for the world aerospace and aeronautics industries.

In 2003 and 2004, Alcan and its community partners announced the creation of more than 750 jobs in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region in Quebec.
