Understanding hereditary diseases is important
to a society. In Quebec, Canada, where Alcan has long maintained
a substantial presence, the Company has supported the Corporation
de recherche et d'action sur les maladies héréditaires
(CORAMH) (Research and Action on Hereditary Diseases) since
2003. CORAMH's aim is to reduce the rate of hereditary diseases
among newborns and to support research toward developing cures
for those diseases.
As part of Alcan's Community Investment Program, an employee
from Alma Works in the SaguenayLac-Saint-Jean community
(Pierre Lavoie, who is also a triathlon athlete) works full-time
in a mandate with CORAMH.
As part of his mandate to mobilize the region to this cause,
from 2003 until 2006, Pierre will be engaged in efforts toward
increasing awareness and prevention of hereditary diseases
that are specific to the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. In
2004, the Alcan representative met over 10,000 individuals
in the region, among them some 7,000 students.
As a major partner of the SaguenayLac-Saint-Jean region,
Alcan is taking an active role in a local health issue and
demonstrating its concern for the future of the region and
the development of its population.
