WBCSD Working Group on Accountability and Reporting
(Co-chair: Travis Engen, President and CEO, Alcan
Inc.)
Co-chaired by Travis Engen, Alcan President and CEO,
this groundbreaking work was launched in 2004 to
plot the connections between sustainable development
and accountability, and show how they can be exploited
to streamline business. The Working Group is focusing
on the relationship between accountability, sustainability
and business objectives. With little hard evidence or
rigorous research in this area, a key initiative of
the Working Group in 2004 was a co-chair discussion
paper aimed at furthering dialogue with member companies
and provoking debate. The paper distils the ideas and
experiences of companies to identify the opportunities
and challenges for business.

Partnering Against Corruption Initiative
In January 2005, Alcan and 61 other companies in the
energy, engineering and construction, and mining and
metals sectors committed to a zero-tolerance policy
to combat corruption and bribery. As part of the World
Economic Forum's Partnering Against Corruption Initiative
(PACI), the group signed a statement supporting the
Partnering Against Corruption Initiative Principles.
The PACI Principles are derived from Transparency International's
Business Principles for Countering Bribery and call
for two fundamental actions: a zero-tolerance policy
towards bribery, and the development of a practical
and effective implementation program.
By supporting the initiative, companies will either
implement anti-bribery and anti-corruption practices
based on the PACI Principles or use them to benchmark
and improve their existing programs. The widespread
adoption of the PACI Principles will raise business
standards across the world and contribute to the goals
of good governance and economic development.
Alcan has participated in the PACI taskforce and will
continue to be involved with their activities in the
future. Activities, as agreed at the PACI governors
meeting in January 2005, are to:
| |
Increase the number of signatories. |
| |
Share best practices. |
| |
Develop compliance mechanisms.
|
| |
Raise awareness in countries and regions with
corruption problems.

ISO Advisory Group on Social Responsibility
(Chair: Daniel Gagnier, Senior Vice President,
Corporate and External Affairs, Alcan Inc.)
A special multi-stakeholder ISO Advisory Group on Social
Responsibility was chaired by Daniel Gagnier, senior
vice-president, External and Corporate Affairs, Alcan Inc.
The group worked over a period of 18 months to
produce a report and set of recommendations on whether
ISO should pursue development of international guidelines
on social responsibility for use by all types of organizations
worldwide. The Advisory Group's report and recommendations
presented in June 2004 helped set the stage for ISO's
decision immediately following to launch a formal work
program aimed at developing the future ISO 26000 guidance
standard for publication in 2008.
The Advisory Group's work has been an important step
in directing ISO to broaden its scope in the area of
social and environmental responsibility. United Nations
Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, described it as "an
initiative which dovetails well with the universal principles
of the UN Global Compact on human rights, labour conditions,
the environment and anti-corruption." Alcan continues
to be an active participant in activities of ISO, including
current chairmanship of ISO's TC 207 working group that
spearheads ISO's work in the area of environmental management
standards.

Throughout 2004, Alcan has been an active supporter
of and participant in work of the European Aluminium
Association's (EAA) Aluminum for Future Generations
Programme. Activities in 2004 included:
| |
The official launch of the results of the EAA's
groundbreaking exercise on sustainable development
indicators, marking an important step in the commitment
made by the entire aluminum sector to be responsible
economic contributors, while providing employment
and minimizing environmental effects. The EAA will
work further on its commitment towards sustainable
progress and intends to deliver its next sustainability
report in 2006, thus ensuring a dynamic and
continuous benchmark for the whole aluminum sector
in Europe. |
| |
Launch of the Aluminium in the Olympics
website, on the occasion of the last Olympic Summer
Games in Athens, which highlighted the key role
of aluminum in the Olympic Games thanks to its numerous
qualities and versatility. Aluminum applications
included the Olympic torch, materials used in various
sports, as well as use in sport facilities and non-sport
venues. |
| |
EAA Commission of a study by Delft University
on Collection of Aluminium from Buildings in
Europe which investigated the demolition of
a significant number of buildings in six European
countries using an innovative on-site approach.
The study found that the aluminum collection rate
in both residential and non-residential buildings
is over 92%. The study highlights that the main
drive behind this positive result is the economic
value of recovered aluminum together with a well-established
and efficient aluminum recycling scheme.

commitment towards sustainable development across the
three pillars of environmental footprint, economic growth
and social progress. It is an essential requirement

World Economic Forum Water Initiative
(Co-chair: Travis Engen, President and CEO, Alcan
Inc.
Alcan president and CEO Travis Engen continued to co-chair
the World Economic Forum's Water Initiative throughout
2004. A highlight was the special session at the 2004
Davos Economic Summit entitled Water in 2014:
Making Sure There's Enough to Go Around. Moderated
by Mr. Engen, the session involved a productive multi-stakeholder
dialogue where participants agreed to work towards creating
a watershed-specific task force at the Africa Economic
Forum in Maputo.
The Water Initiative has also been actively involved
in the Africa Water Project Exchange, a new matchmaking
service designed to create public-private partnerships
for the delivery, conservation and management of water
projects in Africa. The Africa Water Project Exchange
is the first regional component of the Water Project
Exchange, the main component of the Water Initiative

Alcan was a key corporate partner in the development
of efforts to map the business case for access to safe
water and sanitation. The global map of access to safe
drinking water and sanitation is an innovative awareness-raising
and learning tool for business, which looks at the role
of business and the manner in which proactive companies
are engaging through partnerships to increase water
access and equity around the world. The map was created
by Maplecroft to mark the International Decade for Action
Water for Life, 2005-2015 beginning with
World Water Day on March 22, 2005. The map, which was
officially sanctioned by the United Nations, represented
a partnership that included the World Economic Forum,
the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
