China Business Council on Sustainable Development
Alcan is an active member in the China Business Council on Sustainable Development (CBCSD), launched in October 2003. 2004 China Aluminum Forum
Held in Hainan Province, the 2004 China Aluminum Forum involved more than 700 delegates from over 31 countries and regions to discuss a variety of industry subjects. At the forum, Alcan presented "Sustainability – A Foundation for the Future" and discussed the overall importance of capturing and delivering social, environmental and economic value and opportunities to create value through sustainability.

New Joint Venture Smelter in Qingtongxia – EHS FIRST implementation
In March 2004, a definitive joint venture agreement was finalized that gave Alcan a 50% stake in a modern prebake smelter in China, with an option to acquire up to 80% interest in a new 250,000 tonne potline under construction. In mid-2004, Alcan successfully introduced EHS FIRST to its two Chinese partners, building on its goal to develop a world-class smelter and raise existing standards to Alcan's world-class EHS standards. To date, both management and employees have been extremely receptive, showing the strong leadership in EHS excellence that Alcan offers as a company operating in China.
