In the new commitment period of 2006-2010, Alcan has established a new indicator that combines Alcan’s different business groups and product lines into an indexed unit of production. This provides an overall indicator per unit of production to allow for the reporting of company-wide performance on an intensity basis. In 2006, Alcan achieved a 2% reduction in direct C02 equivalent emissions intensity towards its 2006-2010 reduction target of 10%. Commitment applies to sites in which Alcan's ownership is equal to or greater than 50 percent and/or managed by Alcan.

Direct emissions are from fuel consumption and operating processes. Indirect emissions include estimates related to the production of purchased electricity. The Company has undertaken survey work to identify the approximate volume of Scope 3 emissions and the results indicate that Scope 3 emissions from the transport of Alcan goods to customers represent an approximate 4% additional level of emissions over Alcan’s total absolute emissions.

Certain comparative information has been restated to conform with updated information obtained during the current period. A significant proportion of the absolute reduction of GHG emissions from 2004 to 2005 is related to changes in asset mix, including the spin-off of Novelis, and the closure or divestiture of Primary Metal and Bauxite and Alumina sites. Reductions in GHG emissions are the result of continued progress through the TARGET program and to the different programs related to the reduction of anode effects (R&D, continuous improvement, process control).

89% of Alcan's GHG emissions are related to operations located in Annex B countries of the Kyoto protocol.

As Alcan makes a wide range of products, it is difficult to normalize production at a company-wide level. Often, for comparison with other companies, sales are used as a common denominator. Increased sales in 2006 resulted in a decrease in the GHG emission rate as compared to 2005. Certain comparative information has been restated to conform with updated information obtained during the current period.

Driven primarily by PFC reductions through the EHS FIRST TARGET program, the direct emissions rate shows a progressive reduction. Certain information has been restated to conform with updated information obtained during the current period.

The 2004 rate has been restated due to a correction made in production data. The small increase noted in 2006 was due to weather-related production stoppages at one of our major operations.

Within the EHS FIRST TARGET program, the different initiatives related to the minimization of anode effects (R&D, continuous improvement, process control) have been enormously successful in reducing PFC emissions from our smelters. In 2006, an 18% reduction in perfluorocarbon emissions was achieved. The 31% reduction in 2005 resulted primarily from the optimization of processes at two sites that had been recently acquired. The increase between 2003 and 2004 was largely related to the change in technology mix due to the acquisition of Pechiney.
