Alcan reduced its recordable case rate by 23% in 2006, with 106 Alcan sites performing at ZERO recordable cases. Our strong commitment to EHS resulted in a recordable case rate that decreased by 77% from 2001 to 2006. 2006 witnessed a 28% reduction in the lost time injury/illness case rate, with 63% of Alcan sites having no such events. From 2001 to 2006, Alcan has reduced the incidence of these events by 78%. Certain comparative information has been restated to conform with updated information obtained during the current period.
Alcan saw a strong improvement in the serious injury case rate, with a reduction of 21% in 2006; performance was 15% better than target of 0.26.

The increase in the days lost rate in 2006 is due to two fatalities that occurred during the year. When we exclude these fatalities, the days lost rate (14.76) is a 34% improvement over 2005, which is indicative of a reduction in severity of cases. In 2006, 58% of Alcan sites performed at ZERO days lost.
In 2006 Alcan suffered two fatalities. These types of accidents are preventable and we continue to focus on our key risks in order to avoid such accidents. In addition, we investigate each incident thoroughly – extracting learnings and sharing them across the company to further prevent accidents from repeating.
