With operations that are energy- and material-intensive, Alcan relies on water and land resources as key inputs into its operations. Conservation efforts are conducted both independently and with community stakeholders who share in the Company’s success at managing these resources effectively. Stakeholder interests are broad and sometimes there are competing uses for land and water, including ecological, agricultural, recreational, and social applications.

Effective water management has, in some cases, made it possible to eliminate process water releases and to use rainwater in place of other water resources. In mining operations, the Company seeks to incorporate best practices, protect off-site areas and rehabilitate exhausted mine sites.

Through responsible management, Alcan can contribute positively to biodiversity, both locally and globally. In all activities, biodiversity conservation is an essential component of the Company’s overall approach to natural resource stewardship. One of the guiding principles of Alcan’s EHS FIRST policy is to endeavour to protect and restore natural biodiversity as part of our commitment to be an environmental leader in everything we do and everywhere we operate.
