Environmental commitment covers a wide spectrum of actions such as lessening the impact on the environment, using resources wisely, and taking a stewardship approach to operations and products.

Elements of our environmental commitment include:

  • Implementing environmental management systems at our facilities;
  • Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions through initiatives such as our TARGET program;
  • Improving the environmental performance of our products and processes through R&D;
  • Implementing resource and product stewardship;
  • Increasing stakeholder interaction;
  • Involving employees.

Environmental Management Systems

Each Alcan business group is responsible and accountable for the effective operation of its facilities, including readiness for emergency response and environmental performance.

In 1996, the Company established a goal for each of its facilities to work towards recognized environmental standards that emphasize policy, planning, implementation and operation, checking and corrective actions, and management review.

By December 31, 2001, more than 70% of our non-packaging facilities were certified to either ISO 14001 (International Organization for Standardization), EMAS (European Eco-Management and Auditing Scheme) or national standards such as the British Standards Institute's BS 7750.

This includes virtually all our aluminum smelters and fabricated products facilities. Other installations have ensured that appropriate procedures are in place. For instance, for several years our packaging facilities have been implementing an integrated approach to safety, health and environment (SHE) risk management.

Each packaging plant has a SHE steering committee and every three years all sites undergo an EH&S review by an external consultant.

Implementing environmentalmanagement systems in both the aluminum and packaging sides of our organization is a key strategy for moving towards greater sustainability.

Alcan's capital expenditures specifically related to external environmental matters and improved working conditions in our facilities totalled $65 million in 2001 and $133 million in 2000. In addition, expenditures charged against income for environmental protection were $335 million in 2001 (including the increase in the Company's environmental reserves for spent potlining treatment and bauxite residue site remediation) and $91 million in 2000. Our actions in EH&S are ultimately governed by the Environment, Health and Safety Committee of the Board of Directors.
